scrawny antisocial girl, 23, seeks attractive white iBook G4 power cord
So, relatively recently my iBook G4 power cord broke and Cate offered me her old one. Now her old one is becoming untrustworthy and I am concerned that it will soon break entirely. I would really rather not shell out the cash required to buy another cord, so I ask you, my friends, if you have recently upgraded from an iBook G4 to a new computer, and might be able to send me your old power cord. I will reimburse your shipping and send you cookies also (ask Cate! it took me a while to send them, but I did, and they were green for St. Patrick's Day too!).

have you checked eBay? usually such items can be gotten very cheap there.

yeah, but not cheap enough dammit! :grin: I'll probably go the internet route if I have to, but I haven't found this particular model for less than like, $40-50.

oh, yeah. that's not cheap. cheap is 50 cents plus shipping (which I have gotten cell phone power cords for).

unfortunately this model is extremely badly designed (I've had two new ones break on me, plus this one, in three years) ... it's something like $120 new, and the used ones are always broken, so they don't end up going very cheaply at all.

If push comes to shove I can probably fix the one you have now. Assuming I don't die between now and 10pm saturday I'd be willing to take a stab at it.

How is it acting up? Does the cord only work when bent in a certain place or something?

No ... the fragile metal bits at the end (God, I really do hate these cords, they're so badly designed) got bent ... they were already bent when Cate passed it on to me, but now they're more bent, and even when it's plugged in it's really hard to get the cord to actually charge the damn computer without pressing it very hard and jiggling it a bit, and then even if it is charging for a while sometimes it'll stop charging and you'll have to mess with it more. I'm a little worried that I'll damage the contact point within the computer if I have to keep doing it, and that would probably be obscenely expensive and require me to send the machine off somewhere.

It might help if you posted the output voltage and wattage/amperage information printed on the adapter, since Apple made half a dozen different power adapters that look just like that. You'll need one with the same output voltage (+/- 10%) and equal or greater wattage/amperage.

Also, if the tip is broken and you have another one (or can find one) with a working tip, your friend can solder the working tip on the working charger (I did this for Lola one time after Tofuti chewed through her cord).

Apparently not! In retrospect, I should have foreseen the whole banning thing. But some of those poems made it totally worth it, and the banning came just in time that I didn't have to send the prizes, too! I shall write a "best of ridiculous limericks" LJ post soon.
